Theme: Was there a Renaissance in Japan?
Presenter: Mariko Nakamura
One of the major themes in history lessons at Steiner schools is the evolution of human consciousness. Among these, the ‘Renaissance’ taught in class 7 is surely a theme that is cherished in schools everywhere. This is because it represents a significant transition from the Greek and Roman cultural periods to the Fifth Cultural Period (the modern era), and it is a theme that matches the developmental stage of class 7 pupils.
If we are talking about changes in human consciousness, this surely cannot be limited to Europe alone. So, was there a Renaissance in Japan as well?
When I examine the history and culture of Japan during this period, I can see some fascinating changes. What changes took place in Japanese attitudes and consciousness during the Renaissance period?
What similarities and differences are there between the Renaissance in Europe and that in Japan?
I intend to explore these questions through historical events, the people who lived during that era, changes in Buddhism, and developments in art and artistic works. Furthermore, during the breakout sessions, I would like to hear about how things were in other parts of Asia.
